The Real Story about Cisco’s Limited Lifetime Warranty

Not all lifetime warranties are equalAugust 2009 — Businesses are looking to improve the efficiency of their IT infrastructure purchases by reducing total cost of ownership. An important aspect of the lifetime cost of a product is the warranty coverage. Responding to HP’s leadership with the ProCurve Lifetime Warranty1, Cisco has introduced what may appear to be a similar offering: the Cisco Limited Lifetime Warranty2. Customers should understand that not all lifetime warranties are equal. We have read Cisco’s publically available warranty information2 and found that there are important differences between the lifetime warranties offered by Cisco and HP ProCurve.

Based on our reading of Cisco’s published warranty statements, we came to the following conclusions which you may find interesting:

Fact 1: The Cisco Limited Lifetime warranty is limited to five (5) years from the announcement of the discontinuance of a covered product.2

The ProCurve Lifetime Warranty never ends as long as the customer owns the product.

Fact 2: The Cisco Limited Lifetime warranty covers fans and power supplies to just five (5) years in total. 2

The ProCurve Lifetime Warranty includes fans and power supplies under the lifetime terms and conditions.

Fact 3: The Cisco Limited Lifetime warranty states that Cisco will use commercially reasonable efforts to ship a replacement part within ten (10) working days after receipt of the RMA request.2

HP ProCurve has been providing advanced replacement with next-business-day delivery (not just shipment) in most countries for our ENTIRE product line since 1998!

Fact 4: The Cisco Limited Lifetime warranty does not include free technical assistance center support.2

For over a decade, HP ProCurve switch customers have had access to Level 1 support teams for almost all LAN switch products, including our 5400 and 8200 chassis series, for as long as they own the product. Assistance is available for product specific questions on product features and specifications, basic troubleshooting and usage.

HP ProCurve customer issues can get elevated to Level 2 and 3 teams, and to the HP ProCurve R&D (Lab) team, if required."

Bottom line: Not all lifetime warranties are equal. The ProCurve Lifetime Warranty has broad coverage across the ProCurve portfolio while the Cisco Limited Lifetime warranty is more limited in scope.

Customers re-evaluating their total cost of ownership are turning more and more to HP ProCurve. The HP ProCurve Lifetime Warranty[1] is a major factor that differentiates us from Cisco.
