Liquid Cooling is an HP innovation allowing for the highest levels of workstation performance but without the corresponding increases in thermal heat and acoustic noise.
This is achieved through the use of a liquid cooling assembly that quickly moves heat away from the processors to a heat exchanger located near the outside back wall of the enclosure, improving cooling efficiency and reducing overall airflow requirements.
Additional details can be found in the white paper titled ‘Reducing Acoustical Noise in Personal Workstations by Increasing Cooling Efficiency’(400K, PDF)

The liquid cooled xw9400 has two cold-plates, rather than large air-cooled heatsinks, that are firmly attached to the top of the processors. The cold-plates, pump, and liquid coolant are all connected to a heat exchanger with proprietary rubber tubing, designed for rugged use, high temperatures, and long life. Finally, the entire liquid cooling assembly is housed within a small plastic frame for quick installation and/or processor upgrades.
