- I have Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional (32-bit version) installed on my workstation but I'm interested in installing Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. What are my options?
Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition is available preinstalled on HP Personal Workstations. An EM64T enabled workstation should provide leading performance for many 32-bit applications. Although not all 32-bit applications run as normal on a 64-bit operating system, many will, providing a "friendly" transition path from 32-bit to 64-bit computing. It is advised to pre-test your applications by using Microsoft's 64-bit 120 day free trial before you order EM64T. For more information on Microsoft's free trial program, visit the Microsoft web site.
- I have a HP computer that is not part of the HP Workstation product line. How can I update that computer to Windows XP Professional x64 Edition?
If the x64 OS is acquired by other means, you will need to obtain drivers for specific hardware on your PC. This installation will not be supported by HP.
- Is there any way that I can try out x64 without committing to it long term?
If you don't think you want to fully commit to x64, you may want to try Windows XP Professional x64 via the 120 day trial edition on the Microsoft website. This would allow you try x64, then return to standard 32 bit XP. You will also need all the pertinent HP drivers that complement x64. These come on a recovery CD or they are downloadable from the HP driver download website. You should load x64 first, then start downloading the drivers on this page. You should start with the chipset driver. Armed with this information, you should be able to "try out" x64 for 120 days.
- What else should be considered when installing Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition?
We suggest that you upgrade your BIOS to the latest version The x64 installation is a "clean install" and will reformat your hard disc drive. Be sure to backup all your data before starting the installation. Some existing applications and hardware may not function with x64. Contact the application or hardware vendor for support information.
- Can I run both XP (32) and x64 on the same box?
It is permissible, as long as you have a COA for both operating systems. The operating systems can't run concurrently, but you can choose which OS to use at boot time. Remember, you have to have a license (COA) for each OS.
- Where can I go to get more information regarding Microsoft's new Windows® XP Pro x64 Software?
Please visit Microsoft's official web page for the latest information.
